“I met Lola Purping during our “photo-walk” at Binondo today. She was sitting quietly at the gutter right outside the San Lorenzo Ruiz Church. I couldn’t help but noticed the big lump on her face that she is trying to cover with her hair. She would throw some shy glances at me perhaps because she felt uneasy that a big guy carrying a huge camera is staring at her. I smiled at her and she timidly smiled back at me. I sat besides her and tried to strike a conversation.

Lola Purping is a street dweller from Samar. She is about 70 years old with poor eyesight and carrying a large tumor near her face. She and her grandchildren would sleep with empty stomachs on the streets where and whenever the night would catch them. I told her that she is a bit old to take care of her grandchildren. She told me that her children left her without a choice as they went to Cotobato and never returned until now.

2 days ago, she lost her few valuables, money and medicines to a pickpocket as she was going out of the church where she stays from morning till afternoon.

I asked her if I can take her photo and put her story on my blog hoping that some kind souls might be able to offer some help – any help. With tears on her eyes, she nodded.

If you happen to pass by San Lorenzo Ruiz Church in Binondo, you might see Lola Purping quietly sitting along the gutter when she is not inside the church praying. Please offer a kind smile to her.

I would appreciate if you can share this and make it viral until it reaches the heart of someone capable of and willing to help her and her grand children.”

We’re at it again, FACToids. Welcome Back Party: Round 2! The Black & White Party will be at Kobe from 11PM-2AM, the night of January 28th. That’s this Saturday. Start the spring semester off right! We’ve got big things planned, so it only makes sense to begin with a bang.

*Please note that Black & White means what it says: black and white. Wear it, rock it, flaunt it.

Check out this photo from last year’s Culture Show, which we’ve cleverly used as the background for this year’s Culture Night Acting Workshop flyer! :D Eh? Ehhhh?

If you are interested in performance and are free on Thursday, the 26th, from 6-8PM, please head over to the Franklin St. Gym’s 3rd floor to sharpen your acting skills! The acting workshop will be led by Colin Kauflin and will feature plenty of fun, engaging performance and improv activities. Bring a friend!

Give Bras Donation

sosophiesticated:

I’m not one to try and garner a lot of attention to myself through social media and networks but I’m asking for help in a cause that I believe we can have a profound impact in.

Yesterday I came across an article that lead me to an initiative that completely inspired me in a way that I haven’t felt in a long time. It brought about a sense of urgency, a sense of passion, a sense of need to get involved right now and spread the word to anyone who will hear it.

www.soma.com/givebras

Soma Intimates is hosting their 3rd nationwide bra donation to benefit women who are victims of domestic violence. I know that clothing/donation drives are not by any means new but for some reason I can’t explain how this concept shook me. It’s so simple. Beyond simple really.

I rummaged through my own underwear drawer and found seven bras that I don’t want or wear anymore. And I’m sure you or someone you know is the same way. Especially with everyone coming back to school this weekend we can gather at least a hundred bras to donate. Look in your drawers, ask your mother, your sister. Soma is accepting gently used and washed bras that will be distributed to local shelters in our own community. Those that can’t be donated will be sent for proper recycling so they aren’t wasted and end up in landfills.

There are two Soma locations right here in Richmond and none in the NOVA or 757 area so I am asking, pleading to take some time out while packing and look. I know that I have an addiction to buying new bras constantly and shove the old ones to the back corners of my dresser. I am personally willing to come collect them from you and take them in myself. All you have to do is bring them back.

I am challenging myself and this young community to gather 300 bras to donate. I’m reaching out to you, your friends, your organizations for support. If you are interested in getting more involved and helping in collection or awareness please contact me!

The drive is running from January 12 – February 20 giving us plenty of time to reach our goal. Let’s start the New Year with a bang and reach into our hearts and dressers starting this weekend. What better way to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. than to stand behind an honorable cause?

PLEASE REBLOG/RETWEET/SHARE/INVITE FRIENDS. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

FACT females, please help out as you pack to head back to Richmond for the semester. Clean out your underwear drawers! Your donations to Soma definitely beat having ancient, no-longer-in-use bras filling up every crevice of your wardrobe.
