Those who attended tonight’s 4th General Body Meeting were fortunate enough to hear Culture Night tri-chair, Maria Camia, recite this short thriller. (AH AH AH AH.) This was one Culture Night Script Committee applicant’s response to a prompt that the chairs required in the application. This year, the Culture Show will have a “thriller” theme, so the chairs asked all applicants to include a Filipino mythological creature in their stories. This applicant chose the Matruculan, a vampire-like being who impregnates virgins, eats the fetus, and kills the mother.

The Visitor

He hung his trenchcoat over the doorknob before approaching the bed with a slow, sly stride. A sleek, sheepish smirk spread across the Visitor’s face, where his skin stretched battered with lines and battle scars across a plane of fragile bone. A young woman lay in the sheets, paralyzed as he brushed his fingers across her bare chest. She didn’t remember him. Her unborn fetus was the only reminder of their previous encounter — that dreadful, agonized, sensual night four months before. “Three…” whispered the Visitor, slowly counting down to the anticipated act.
At his first knock of the cottage door last spring, the woman dropped her dinner plate. She didn’t hear it shatter. She didn’t see her glass tip over, red wine spreading like venom on the floor.
“Two…” he groaned, caressing her stomach near the point of entry before their
beet-red lips met.
The raps repeated, louder still, and the woman didn’t realize her sudden, strange state of arousal.
Blackness poured through the woman’s eye sockets as she opened the door.
Her pained screams resonated as he thrust in his right hand, knotting her intestines
around her cervix, bringing her insides to a climactic choke. Blood, innards, and flesh spewed freely beneath her. She lay unconscious. Then, like a hungry wolf, he ripped out her womb.
“Dulo,” he mumbled. Before sinking his teeth into the baby’s skull, the Visitor
penetrated the woman with his knife.
